Trieste Italy, The Gem of the Adriatic

Trieste Christmas Weather Italy

Once you’ve seen Venice do yourself a favour and spend some time in this gem of the Adriatic.

Trieste is the capital city of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region in northeast Italy. A port city, it occupies a thin strip of land between the Adriatic coast and Slovenia’s border on the limestone-dominated Karst Plateau.

Trieste is best described as an absolute mish mash of cultures Italian, Austro-Hungarian and Slovenian influences are everywhere to be seen, where else in Italy can you get the best Italian espresso and a perfect apple strudel.

Having only visited Trieste once so far, I can’t wait to visit again, from what I have seen this city is wonderfully located on the Adriatic coast of Italy with the main city square overlooking the Adriatic ocean.

Being able to stroll along the board walk and seeing the Croatian coastline across the Adriatic is one of the most surreal experiences I have had over many years of now visiting Italy. The city centre is beautifully maintained with many coffee shops, restaurants and artesian outlets, if you’re not hungry you will be by the time you’re done with your morning or afternoon passeggiata.

We visited December 2018 and to say that Trieste is magical during Christmas would not do it justice. Trieste at Christmas time needs to be on your bucket list, the main city square at night is a true wonder to behold, yes, it’s cold but then that’s what red wine, limoncello and grappa is best used for.

From a personal perspective I now have my southern and northern bookmarks as far as Italy is concerned. We may have only been in Trieste for a few days, however I can definitely see a longer stay in our future.
